Fixed target experiments can collect a very large number of interesting collisions, as the density of atoms in a heavy target is very high . This is important in searches for very unlikely events or when large numbers of events are needed. The price to pay is that only a fraction of the incoming energy is spent creating new particles. |
At CERN fixed target experiments use primary beams of protons, and all sorts of secondary
beams are used such as pions, muons and neutrinos.
